Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, found only in two isolated regions of Africa: the Virunga Mountains along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Their global population is estimated at just over 1,000 individuals, making them critically endangered.

Despite their rarity, mountain gorillas have shown remarkable resilience thanks to decades of conservation efforts. Strict protections, ecotourism programs, and community-led initiatives have all contributed to slowly increasing their numbers. Today, travelers who trek to see them in the wild must follow strict guidelines — including staying at least seven meters away, limiting visits to one hour, and keeping voices low. Gorillas live in family groups led by a dominant silverback male, whose job is to protect, guide, and mediate within the group. Interactions with humans are almost always carefully managed, making unplanned close encounters extremely rare.
