Woman rescues chained-up donkey and gives him a second chance

Woman Rescues Chained-Up Donkey And Gives Him A Second Chance

August 17, 2025August 17, 2025

When Kelly first noticed the donkey by the roadside, her heart sank. He was tied up with a chain, standing dirty, neglected, and clearly uncomfortable. Each day she drove past, she stopped to bring him food, but it quickly became obvious that this wasn’t a temporary situation — this donkey needed help.

For days she worried over him, trying to figure out what to do. His leg was sore where the rope had cut into his skin, his hooves hadn’t been cared for, and yet, despite it all, he greeted her with friendliness and trust. That was the moment she knew she couldn’t leave him behind.

What followed was a leap of faith: an offer to buy his freedom, a scramble to raise the money, and a plan to get him into a safe home. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. Because once this donkey left the chain behind, he transformed completely.

Watch the video below to see how Kelly gave Bocelli a second chance — and how he embraced his new life with joy.

💡 Did You Know?

Donkeys are often underestimated compared to horses, but they’re incredibly intelligent, social animals. They form strong emotional bonds and have excellent memories, capable of recognizing people and places even after years apart.

One of the reasons Bocelli’s rescue is so powerful is because donkeys are also highly sensitive to their treatment. When neglected or mistreated, they may appear withdrawn or stubborn — but given safety and kindness, they quickly reveal affectionate and playful personalities.

In many parts of the world, donkeys are used as working animals, often carrying heavy loads or tied in harsh conditions. But when cared for properly, they can live well into their 30s or even 40s. At around 18 years old, Bocelli still has many good years ahead, which makes Kelly’s rescue especially meaningful.

Animal behaviorists often compare donkeys to dogs because of their loyalty and curiosity. They thrive on companionship, whether from other equines or from humans, and they respond strongly to love and routine. Bocelli’s transformation — from a sad, chained animal to a playful “goofball” — is living proof of how quickly hope can return when an animal finally feels safe.
